This hyperrealistic watercolor painting captures the dynamic energy of the "Freedom Horses," the iconic bronze sculpture by Veryl Goodnight in East Naples, Florida. Living in Florida and frequently visiting Naples, I have always admired this monument to strength and motion. As I painted, I meticulously built up layers over three weeks to bring the scene to life—the glistening horses, the textured rocks, and the rippling water all rendered in breathtaking detail.
A unique twist emerged during the process: I unintentionally flipped my reference photo, causing the wind and the flag to flow in the same direction as the horses. But rather than a mistake, I see this as an artistic reinterpretation—an unexpected harmony between nature and movement. The wind, like the galloping horses, becomes part of their unstoppable momentum, pushing them forward in a poetic fusion of freedom and force.
